Stonefruit
Stonefruit (Peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots and cherries)
Stonefruit grow best in well-drained soils rich in organic matter. They prefer soils with a neutral to slightly acid pH. Fertilizing stone fruit is usually recommended in two stages, one application in Spring and another after harvest (approximately February/March depending on the area).
An application of approximately 9 - 12% Nitrogen should be applied, such as Paton's Blue or #20 Multipurpose.
Prior to planting: Apply Mother Earth, Paton's Blood and Bone or Paton's Blood and Bone Plus K at a rate of 200 grams per square meter. Work well into the soil. In addition to Blood and Bone, for low fertility soils, apply an all purpose fertilizer such as Paton's Banana Special or No 20 Multipurpose at 200 grams per square metre. Work this well into the soil. For clay soils, apply gypsum at a rate of 500 grams per square metre. For acidic soils, apply lime at 100 grams per square metre.
- For established trees: Either Paton's Multipurpose No 20 or Paton's No 25 plus Magnesium are ideal for stone fruit.
- Young Trees: Apply 20% of the mature tree rate in the first year. Increase this amount by 20% for each year up to five years of age.
- Mature Trees: Apply 500 kg per tree twice per year. Apply 4 weeks prior to bud burst and 4 weeks after bud burst.
An application of Sulphate of Potash or Potassium Nitrate at 250 grams per mature tree (applied after stone hardening) will also be beneficial.
One adult handful equals 50grams.
How to Apply
Apply to the drip zone of the plant and very lightly tickle in or cover with organic matter. Care must be taken not to damage the root system. Water well after application.
