Fertilizer Programs for Stonefruit

In general, the fertilizer requirements for stone fruit vary according to both the age of the tree and the time of year.

Tree Establishment

At planting, a young tree is in an active phase of growth and requires approximately 0.06 kg/N/tree, 0.03 kg/P/tree and 0.13 kg/K/tree depending upon species and existing soil fertility. A relatively high analysis NPK fertilizer is required to meet this demand, preferably with an organic source mixed in to allow slow release over time.

A recommended mix, post planting would include:

  1. Paton 19 - qt a rate of 200-300g per tree. Apply prior to planting and work into the soil.
  2. Paton Blood & Bone - at a rate of 150-200g per tree. Apply on the soil surface out to the edge of the drip line and lightly incorporate.

Young Trees

Rates at 20% of that for the mature tree is recommended for the first year. This amount should be increased by 20% for each year up to 5 years of age.

Mature Trees

A mature tree requires approximately 0.3 kg/N/tree, 0. 15 kg/P/tree and 0.65 kg/K/tree depending upon species and soil existing fertility. A relatively high analysis NPK fertilizer is required to meet this demand, preferably with an organic source mixed in to allow slow release over time.

Patons also offer their Custom Blending Service which matches your soil and tissue testing results with a specific fertilizer mix to maximise the effectiveness of your fertilizer application and save you money.
